Caves, coffee, and meads

By

I worked 2 days, and then off for one (today). I go back to work tomorrow. Time to make the most of the day off. I slept til about 9 and then dilly dallied around for a few hours. I then went off in search of an adventure!

I found myself at the Indian Echo Caverns, a privately owned/toured cavern nearby. The tour was around 30 minutes and was great. I had a really good time. It’s a brisk trip down several flights of stairs and then a beautiful guided walk around the cave.

I had an awesome tour guide, Anna, and have finally learned the differences! Stalactites drip water and minerals from the ceiling of the cavern (stalactite has a c like ceiling) and stalagmites seem to grow from the ground (stalagmite has a g like ground!). Columns form where the two meet. Stalactites there grow about half an inch every 100 years. They had some great stories to go with the different cave formations.

After sperlunking, I went on a hunt for a good coffee store or book shop. Lucky me, I found one that was both! Midtown Scholar Bookstore and Cafe was absolutely wonderful. I spent 3 hours there just wandering the shelves and drinking coffee. I picked up a copy of “Pride and Pleasure”; the store of the Schuyler sisters during the Revolutionary War (read: something Hamilton related! WAHOO!) and a few Christmas gifts. They even had signed copies of things!

I wandered across the street and found the Broad Street Market, a collection of “vendors”.. I expected to open the doors and find a bunch of artisans, crafters, soap makers. I was wrong! It’s a massive food court with a load of different cuisines. I ran into a meadery and tried a few sips there.

Overall, a wonderful day. I’m back to the grind tomorrow; then one day off on Saturday (a fun day planned then too!) and then starting nights on Sunday night. We’ll see how that goes. I’ve got my white noise machine and my eye mask ready to commence zombie-fixation.

Have a good weekend if you’re reading along here!
